A composter turns leftovers into fertilizer for planters. It is a default blueprint. Craft it for 200 wood and 2 tarps, or buy one from a Bandit Camp vendor for 30 scrap.

PUT IN FERTILIZER EACH

Horse dung 5

Small trout 0.8 (an older guide says 1.3)

Apples, vegetables, meat, plants, human flesh about 0.2 to 0.3

Parts add up, so a trout and an apple make one whole fertilizer. Expect about 4 to 6 ordinary items per fertilizer.

A fed horse is the best source because every dung gives 5.

Give each planted seed one fertilizer per cycle to keep soil quality close to 100%. Soil quality limits growth time, yield and hardiness.

Berries picked from bushes are not worth composting.

Bandit Camp's produce exchange trades fertilizer at 3 scrap for 2, and players sell spare compost there for passive scrap.
