Your goals are simple: get tools, get shelter, get a bed. Everything else follows from those three.

Punch trees and rocks for wood and stone, then craft a hatchet and a pickaxe. Both are also sold at the Outpost (hatchet 40 scrap, pickaxe 50 scrap).

Craft a sleeping bag early and place it somewhere you can find again. It is your respawn point.

Build a small base with a tool cupboard inside. The cupboard claims the ground and pays upkeep.

Walk to the Outpost. It is a safe zone with three recyclers, two workbenches and shops, so you can gear up with scrap.

Pick up missions from the Outpost NPCs. Oil Rig Raid pays 200 scrap.
